YMCA Hamilton|Burlington|Brantford is partnering with the GERAS Centre for Aging Research to offer adults aged 65 and older
- Free Walking Speed Screening Appointments and
- Free Walking Speed Information Workshops
Walking speed, also called Gait Speed, is an important indicator of mobility, fall risk and overall health, and research from the GERAS Centre for Aging Research highlights its role in supporting healthy aging and independence.
This June, Adults 65+ are invited to book a free 10-minute assessment appointment at one of two YMCA locations and are also welcome to attend Walking Speed Workshops.
Open to the community. No YMCA membership required.
Participants will receive a two-week trial membership.

Free Gait Speed Information Workshops
Community members are also invited to attend a free Walking Speed Information Workshop.
The workshop will explore how gait speed is connected to mobility, frailty, fall risk and cognitive decline, and what to expect during the screening process.

Free Screening Assessments
Each appointment takes about 10 minutes. Participants will complete a simple walking assessment and receive immediate results, along with guidance from trained staff.

Participants will be asked to return for a follow-up assessment to measure change over time.
Follow up assessments will take place between 11:00 AM and 2:00 PM:
September 23 at Les Chater Family YMCA
September 24 Ron Edwards Family YMCA.
