National Child and Youth Mental Health Day, May 7, is a reminder that mental health is built every day through safety, belonging, confidence, and the opportunity to grow. At YMCA Hamilton | Burlington | Brantford, the Youth Achievers Program is helping young people build those foundations by gaining the life skills, resilience, and social connection they need to thrive.

The Challenge Facing Young People

Many young people today are navigating rising levels of anxiety, depression, social isolation, and uncertainty about the future. A lack of real‑world life skills—like coping with emotions and conflict, to managing responsibilities and making decisions—can intensify stress and impact mental well‑being. When young people don’t feel prepared for adulthood, their confidence, self‑esteem and sense of hope can suffer.

The Youth Achievers Program tackles these challenges head‑on by helping young people build competence, confidence, and resilience which are key protective factors for positive mental health.

About the Youth Achievers Program

Currently delivered in Hamilton and Brantford, Youth Achievers is an in‑person, skill‑based program for youth ages 12–24. Through hands‑on learning, practical challenges, and supportive relationships, participants learn by doing. It’s a powerful approach that strengthens independence and emotional well‑being.

The program is built around six pillars, each designed to support mental health and successful transitions into adulthood:

  • Life Skills: Time management, decision-making, and managing change to reduce stress and increase confidence

  • Academic: Study strategies and preparedness that support success and reduce school‑related anxiety

  • Career & Employment: Exploration, job readiness, and workplace skills that build hope and a positive vision for the future

  • Home Management: Practical skills like budgeting, cooking, and first aid that foster independence and stability

  • Social Enrichment: Coping with emotions, handling failure, building relationships, and navigating social media in healthy ways

  • Community Safety: Knowledge and skills to support healthy relationships, online safety, and positive decision-making

Why It Matters

Strong mental health isn’t just about managing challenges—it’s about having the tools to face them. Youth Achievers helps participants develop resilience, grit, and confidence, while strengthening their sense of belonging. By learning how to cope with emotions, manage conflict, and take healthy risks, young people are better equipped to handle life’s pressures and move toward adulthood feeling empowered.

Youth consistently report feeling welcomed, supported, and encouraged to think differently.

“[My comfort level was] five out of five — because Genna and Taylor are so welcoming.”
— Youth Achievers participant

During a problem‑solving and decision‑making workshop, another participant shared:

“[The program] helped me think and unlock ideas and new ways of figuring things out.”

These moments matter. Learning how to think through challenges, rather than avoid them, strengthens resilience and emotional well‑being.

The impact extends beyond the session room. Following an adaptability workshop, a parent shared:

“My son really enjoyed it. He came home thinking about things in a way that he hadn’t before. He now wants to join a debate club because you suggested that he should.”

That shift from hesitation to curiosity reflects growing confidence and comfort with healthy challenges.

The program also adapts to youth needs in real time. After one participant shared that they often felt ignored and isolated, facilitators created an opportunity for them to become student leader of the week. The result was immediate.

The youth became more engaged, confident, and empowered, a reminder that feeling seen and valued is essential to mental health.

Impact and Outcomes

Participants leave the program with:

  • Improved emotional well‑being and self-esteem

  • Stronger social and communication skills

  • Increased confidence in daily life and decision-making

  • Greater readiness for school, work, and independent living

  • A clearer, more hopeful vision of their future

With growing demand, the YMCA is looking to expand the Youth Achievers Program to reach more communities and is excited to offer a Youth Achievers Summer Program to support young people during the months when routines and supports often fall away.
