Handy Helper's Corner: “Raise the Roof” - Wanakita’s roofs are getting a forest friendly facelift!
Nestled deep in the Haliburton Highlands, YMCA Camp Wanakita is more than just a camp—it's a small town.
With over 140 buildings spread across roughly 1000 acres, maintaining the infrastructure is no small feat. But thanks to a dedicated and capable maintenance team, the roofs over our heads are getting a major upgrade.
Our team may be small, but it’s mighty. With a deep sense of pride and purpose, the maintenance team consisting of Director of Facilities Craig Storrie, and Maintenance Specialists Chris Chraszcz, Mark Rice, Tim Maaskant, Jim Burk, and Rowan Mcnichol work year-round to ensure that cabins, lodges, and staff housing remain safe, warm, and welcoming. From lifting cabin foundations to de-icing rooftops in the heart of winter, their commitment ensures that our facilities can be enjoyed for generations to come.
To meet the growing demands of upkeep, we’ve partnered with a few trusted vendors—choosing to go local whenever possible. Supporting the same community that has supported us through the years was a natural choice. Haliburton is home to incredible talent, and we’re proud to work alongside skilled tradespeople who understand the unique needs of our camp.
One of the biggest changes underway is the transition from traditional shingled roofs to durable metal roofing. This isn’t just about longevity; it’s about preserving the iconic look of Camp Wanakita. Each new roof is finished in our signature forest green with red trim, maintaining the aesthetic that campers and visitors have come to know and love.
These upgrades also include improved insulation, benefiting both staff and guests who stay with us year-round. Whether it’s a summer camper or a winter retreat group, everyone deserves comfort and protection from the elements.
As each roof is replaced, a sense of unity emerges. The camp is beginning to take on a more uniform, polished appearance, one that reflects the practicality and pride behind every nail and panel. It’s a transformation rooted in tradition, built for the future.
At YMCA Wanakita, we’re not just maintaining buildings, we’re preserving memories, ensuring safety, and building a legacy—one roof at a time.
