Growing Readers, Growing Potential
In March, something special took root at Six Nations of the Grand River. Inside YMCA Beyond the Bell® classrooms at IL Thomas, a simple tree blossomed into a powerful symbol of possibility through the YMCA Reading Fruit Tree Initiative—an experience that reminded us how learning grows best when imagination, encouragement, and community come together.
From the very first leaves placed on the tree, the impact on the children was unmistakable. Each book they read added new life: one book became a leaf proudly marked with their name; two books earned a piece of fruit, and every story shared helped the tree stretch higher. The classroom buzzed with excitement as children eagerly tracked their progress, returning day after day to see how much their collective reading had helped their tree grow.
“My hope for the Reading Fruit Tree was to give children a way to watch their learning bloom. Every leaf, fruit, cloud, and sunshine was a small act of courage, a child choosing to read, to share, to imagine.” says Christopher Torti, Area Supervisor with YMCA Beyond the Bell.
But this initiative was about far more than filling branches.
As children shared short reflections about their books—earning “sunshine” for the tree—they found their voices. They articulated ideas, made connections, and built up their confidence in conversations.
“I saw quiet children find their voices, and reluctant readers discover joy in stories,” says Christopher
Through drawing favourite characters and scenes—adding “rain clouds” to nourish the tree—children explored new ways to express themselves, strengthening comprehension while discovering the joy of storytelling through art.
“One moment that stays with me is a child carefully drawing their favourite character, then stepping back and saying, ‘This is going to help our tree grow.’ That simple sentence captured everything this initiative was meant to be—learning that feels alive, shared, and rooted in community,” Christopher recalls.
By the end of the month, the tree stood full and vibrant, a visual celebration of what they had built together. The final “harvest” brought the adventure to a close as staff gathered fruit requests and hosted a literacy-themed fruit salad party.
This meaningful experience was made possible by Christopher and the YMCA Beyond the Bell team, whose dedication turns opportunities like this into reality. Beyond the Bell is a donor-funded YMCA program that provides children with safe, enriching out-of-school experiences focused on learning, wellness, and confidence-building. By meeting children where they are and nurturing their potential beyond the classroom, Beyond the Bell helps spark a lifelong love of learning.
The Reading Fruit Tree Initiative is a beautiful example of how the YMCA ignites potential in young people. Literacy development was woven seamlessly with oral language, social connection, creativity, and healthy nutrition—showing children that learning is something you can see, share, and celebrate together.
A single leaf may seem small, but together they formed a thriving tree, just as each act of support, generosity, and encouragement helps our community grow stronger.
Because at the YMCA, we know this to be true: we are greater together.
