What is the program?

The Junior Lifeguard Leadership Program is a FREE pilot program designed to help youth ages 16-24 earn the certifications and job experience required to become a lifeguard.

How does the program work?

The program is broken down into two segments:
1) 10 weeks of training (in-water and on land), during which candidates will earn the necessary certifications to qualify as an assistant lifeguard (Bronze Medallion, Bronze Cross, and/or Standard First Aid)

2) 12 weeks of paid work placement at YMCA pool (2-3 shifts per week, depending on availability)

Who qualifies to participate in this program?

All youth ages 14-24 can participate in the program. Participants do NOT need to have a YMCA membership to participate. It is recommended that participants have some swimming skills.

What is the program cost?

There is no cost for the basic qualifications included in the program; there may be some fees for additional certifications outside of the program requirements.

Where is the program running?

This pilot programming will be running out of several YMCA locations. The next session will begin in late September 2018. Training sessions will take place at the Hamilton Downtown Family YMCA; work placements will be at pools in Waterdown, Hamilton and Burlington.

How do I sign up?

All candidates must go through an intake process, which includes a brief interview as well as an in-water skills screening. NOTE – not all candidates may be suitable for the program, but everyone is welcome to apply and try!
