Meet Yousif. His family arrived in Canada from Iman, Iran in 2021, and they have been a part of the YMCA of Hamilton | Burlington | Brantford community for the past two years. Yousif is involved with the Newcomer Youth Centre, and in 2023 he even went to our traditional overnight camp in Haliburton, Ontario — YMCA Wanakita.

Yousif says the Y has saved his life in many ways, “The YMCA has helped me improve my English, helped me with homework, and getting my marks up. It has helped me with communication and making new friends. Most importantly, the YMCA has helped me with my confidence.”

While at Wanakita, Yousif was able to break out of his shell. It helped him create friendships and acquire skills—like cooking over a campfire!

“I’m very grateful to have gone camping. Thank you to the YMCA!”

Yousif’s father Mohamed says that the Y has helped their entire family thrive in Canada. “As newcomers, we were welcomed at the YMCA and they helped us to adapt. They helped my children with school. They offered support, guidance, and mentorship—whatever is needed and whenever it is needed.”

The family has participated in many events at the Y, including soccer games, and even a picnic down at the Hamilton Harbour!

“I cannot show enough gratitude to the YMCA for all the support and all the guidance,” said Mohammed. “Thank you to the YMCA.”
