When Rupert first arrived in Hamilton, he was filled with equal parts excitement and uncertainty.

As a newcomer to Canada, everything felt unfamiliar—from the streets and the climate to the rhythms of daily life and social customs. Starting from scratch in a new country brought with it both challenges and the deep ache of not yet belonging.

At 35, Rupert had left behind the familiarity of their home country—his culture, laguage, and comfort zone—in search of new opportunities. The early days were filled with obstacles, from navigating public transit to finding employment and simply trying to build new connections in a place where he knew no one.

It was during this time of transition that the YMCA became a guiding light. A language assessment at the Y opened the door to a wealth of newcomer services and resources. More than just practical help, it offered reassurance—that he didn’t have to walk this path alone. The support was structured, welcoming, and rooted in a genuine desire to see newcomers thrive.

Around the same time, a kind-hearted neighbour introduced Rupert o a local ballroom dancing group, offering another unexpected yet joyful way to connect. That community soon became a source of friendship and belonging—one more step toward feeling at home.

Today, Rupert continues to move forward with determination. One of his next goals is to purchase a car—a milestone that represents greater independence, and a chance to explore more of this beautiful country he now calls home.
