Our vision is to help every person achieve their full potential. If you share that vision with us, you can leave a gift to the YMCA of Hamilton|Burlington|Brantford in your will.

This is an opportunity to plan for making a difference for many children, families, adults and seniors, by leaving a lasting legacy.

A gift in a will is also known as a bequest or legacy. There are a number of ways you can leave a gift in your will. Bequests can be in the form of cash, real estate, securities, tangible personal property or other assets.

Making a gift in your will can be as simple as including a sentence or two when you write your will, or adding a codicil to your existing will.

Types of Bequests

  • Specific bequest: A specified dollar amount, or a specific item of property, which is left to a named beneficiary in the will.
  • Residual bequest: A percentage (or) share (or) all of the remainder of your estate after other gifts and liabilities have been paid out.
  • Contingent bequest: A percentage or share of your estate paid only in the event that other named beneficiaries have predeceased you.

Tax Benefits

With a gift in your will, your estate receives a donation receipt for the amount given and a tax credit to be used in your final return. It can be used against 100% of income in the year of death and any excess not used may be carried back one year and used against up to 100% of income in the year before death.

If you are planning on leaving a gift in your will, speak with your family about your wishes and with your lawyer for advice.
