At YMCA Wanakita we believe that camp is more than just the land and the lake - it is the people. This belief is reflected in our experienced, dedicated, and talented team of full time directors. These people have made Wanakita their year-round home.

Each season our directors are supported by a dedicated staff team of outdoor specialists, teachers, university, college, and secondary school students. All staff are selected based on their experience, expertise and commitment to the care, well-being and development of our campers.


All staff hold current Standard First Aid, CPR C and Bronze Cross and come prepared with a number of other certifications, including National Lifeguard Service (NLS), Wilderness First Aid,  and various instructor levels, such as Ontario Recreational Canoeing and Kayaking Association (ORCKA) certification, Swift Water Rescue, International Mountain Bike Association (IMBA) certification and Association of Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) accreditation, among others.


To provide all campers with a safe, quality camping experience, we provide all staff with extensive training prior to each season. Summer staff and Outdoor Centre staff arrive ten days prior to train for their respective roles. This intensive training covers emergency preparedness, child development, activity-specific skills training, homesickness preparedness, program planning, and YMCA Human Resources policies and procedures including YMCA Child Protection. In addition, senior staff spend a five day intensive canoe trip learning tripping skills.
