Closing the achievement gap for school children

YMCA Beyond the Bell program is a highly successful after-school and summer program, featuring literacy, numeracy, nutrition and recreation. It focuses on closing the academic achievement gap experience by children from low income areas versus their middle-income peers.

A Crucial Milestone
Reading at grade level by Grade 3 is a crucial milestone that predicts future school success – including the likelihood that a child will graduate high school.  Three-quarters of children from low-income neighbourhoods fail to meet this milestone. That’s far more than their middle class peers, which is why this difference in academic success is known as the achievement gap.

Beyond the Bell Report Card
Beyond the Bell works with students in Grades 1 – 5 to provide the support they need to succeed.  We measure the programs success each year, by measuring student improvement.

Breaking the Cycle of Poverty
