Twelve-year-old Kevin was born with a mild case of cerebral palsy, causing the left side of his body to be weaker than the right. A regular exercise program at the YMCA helps him build and maintain strength on his weak side. YFit4U is an exercise program specially designed for kids with physical or developmental disabilities. This pilot program is offered through a partnership between the YMCA of Hamilton/Burlington/Brantford and Hamilton Health Sciences.
Instead of travelling to the hospital for exercise sessions with a physiotherapist, children and teens like Kevin visit the YMCA where hospital physiotherapists, YMCA kinesiologists and trainers work as a team to guide them through their exercise programs.
Families appreciate YFit4U because instead of sitting in a hospital waiting room, they can enjoy YMCA programming too. “I wanted to be here to support Kevin,” says his mom Tina, who fits in cardio workouts while Kevin exercises. Workouts are helping Tina manage her weight as well as control her diabetes and high cholesterol.
The YMCA offers a wide variety of programming to help all kids and their families reach their full potential. Help us change lives by donating to the YMCA Strong Kids campaign.
