Luz and Carlos needed child care they could trust in order to pursue English classes, seek work and build a better life for themselves and their three children, David, Linda and Luna. They immigrated to Canada from Colombia, where it’s common practice for extortionists to blackmail business owners by demanding money in exchange for protection.
Luz’s father had refused, and was murdered. So when Carlos received similar threats against his grape wholesale business, the family relocated to Hamilton, where they found refuge in a shelter before moving into their own home. They also found a caring friend in the YMCA of Hamilton/Burlington/Brantford – a safe haven where their children have enjoyed programming including summer camps, PA Days, Christmas and March Break camps and YMCA child care.
“The YMCA helps immigrants like us,” says Carlos, who is grateful for the YMCA’s friendship and support. “The YMCA helps us feel comfortable and safe.”
The YMCA offers a wide variety of programming to help all children and their families reach their full potential. Help us change lives by donating to the YMCA Strong Kids campaign.
