Kennedy brought home something very special from YMCA Wanakita – newfound confidence.
The Grade 8 student from Cathy Wever School in downtown Hamilton visited YMCA Wanakita in the middle of winter with her classmates.
YMCA Wanakita has welcomed students to its Outdoor Program every school year since 1974. This program gives students an opportunity to experience the great outdoors through a variety of activities aimed at helping them build self-esteem and develop a positive attitude towards health, fitness and lifelong learning. Activities are led by YMCA Wanakita staff members who act as positive role models.
Kennedy enjoyed tobogganing, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. But the activity that made the biggest impression was tackling the high ropes. “It was so high up,” says Kennedy, who was frightened at first but mustered up the courage to try.
“I was really happy about that because I was really scared,” recalls Kennedy, who considers mastering the high ropes to be the highlight of her YMCA Wanakita experience.
The YMCA of Hamilton/Burlington/Brantford offers a wide variety of programming to help all children and their families reach their full potential. Help us change lives by donating to the YMCA Strong Kids campaign.
