YMCA Wanakita

1900 - 1929 

• The Hamilton YMCA established boys camps on the Grand River (Camp Tekahoinwake and Fisher Glen on Lake Erie) and utilized YMCA Camp Kitchikewana on Georgian Bay.

1930 -1952

• The camp moved to YMCA Camp Erie Heights on Lake Erie.

1953

• The camp moved again to Haliburton on Koshlong Lake and became YMCA Camp Wanakita (the site was originally called Camp Lagakelo and operated from 1937-1952).

1953 -1968

• Boys Summer Camp

1968 -present

• Co-ed Summer, Resident and Family Camp

1973 -present

• Winter, Spring, Fall Outdoor Centre Programs

1978

• Addition of the Longhouse and winterized facilities

• Sunship Earth

1988

• Purchased Haliburton Hockey Haven

1989

• Developed Wanakita East, West and Central and YMCA Wanakita Day Camp begins

1991

• Addition of Central Core Dining Hall

• Hemophelia Ontario Partnership begins

• Reach for Rainbow Partnership begins

1995

• Addition of the West New Health Centre

1997 - Present

• Major additions of high ropes adventure course and climbing walls

2000

• Addition of Corey's Place Performing Arts Centre and Shoreline Sanctuary

2001

• Addition of new paved basketball court

2002 - 2003

• New Outtrip Centre - Refurbished Basketball Court on East

• 40 camp cabins donated from another camp

• Construction of new East dining hall, West washrooms and sleeping cabins

• Upgrade of water and waste treatment to new standards regulations.

2003

• 50th Anniversary and Grand Opening of new Summer Family Camp

2004

• New trails development for cross-country skiing and mountain biking

• Opening of the Bayer Den

2005

• Purchase Vaughn Cottage now (Hamlin Lodge)

• New East Wash House

• 6 new family camp cabins

2006

• Grand opening of Hamlin Lodge for Performing Arts & Outdoor Ed

• New Mountain biking program begins

• Opening of the Drift Inn

2007

• New Wetland Interpretive Centre

• Opening of the Heritage Museum
