Specialty Programs at Camp Chippewa
Camp Chippewa
Located in the majestic surroundings of Christie Conservation Area, this camp includes spacious playing fields, a beautiful wooded area for supervised explorations, and a safe waterfront setting.
Campers will have the opportunity to experience a combination of traditional day camp activities such as arts and crafts, swimming, archery, canoeing (children are required to wear a lifejacket), wilderness/environmental, science pursuits and weekly themes.

Specialty Programs at Camp Chippewa
Eco-Explorers
Campers will learn about their environment as well as the world around them through exciting activities and wilderness games. These activities will focus on nature education, science and outdoor games that promote learning through fun.
Canoe Skills
This program will provide campers with canoeing skills. Instructors will develop fun activities which will emphasize safety and the basic fundamentals of canoeing. Campers will also have the opportunity to develop other camping skills through traditional camp activities at Camp Chippewa. Children must wear a life jacket while in a canoe. Campers will receive a skills assessment at the end of the 1 week session. Staff to Camper ratio is 1:8
Kayak Skills
This program will provide campers with kayak skills. Instructors will develop fun activities which will emphasize safety and the basic fundamentals of kayaking. Campers will also have the opportunity to develop other camping skills through traditional camp activities at Camp Chippewa. Children must wear a life jacket while in a kayak. Campers will receive a skills assessment at the end of the 1 week session. Staff to Camper ratio is 1:8
Camp FUN-damentals
Camp FUN-damentals allows campers to experience the magic of the outdoors and to learn valuable camping skills in a fun-oriented environment. Offered at Chippewa, Camp FUN-damentals provides a wonderful occasion for campers to experience the outdoors and to spend time with new friends. Camping skills, such as an introduction to orienteering and a variety of survival techniques will be introduced. During the Sleepout, campers will have the opportunity to plan their own dinner, lunch and breakfast and share stories while a staff person cooks meals over a crackling fire.
These campers will enjoy a full camp program, including such camp classics as swimming, archery, arts & crafts and canoeing.
L.I.T. Program
Level 1
The Leader In Training program (Level 1) is a fun program designed for participants to acquire camp-related skills (canoeing, archery and large group leadership) while learning how to work as a team player. Participants will receive an introduction to the YMCA and its core values as well as:
- Planning and delivering a "new" group game
- Special needs integration
- Observing campers in various age groups
- Debriefing about observation experiences
- Job search skills
- Asset building
- Plan a Theme Day Activity as a group
- Youth Gambling Prevention
Level 2
The Leader In Training program (Level 2) enhances the learnings of Level 1. While canoeing, swimming and playing sports, participants will also learn the following skills through fun, creative sessions and hands on experiences: L.I.T. Campers will be guided through these sessions by our professional staff. An evaluation will be done based on performance. A final report will be given to each participant. Level 3 FREE! The L.I.T.s will have the opportunity to improve their skills by volunteering at an indoor camp. During this program the L.I.T. will complete one placement in Hamilton, Burlington or Brantford at an Indoor location. Each placement will last 4 weeks. The L.I.T.s will be responsible for observing an indoor camp program and during the last week, they will be responsible for delivering a large group game, a LOG (low organized game) and an arts and crafts activity. Junior Counsellor (J.C.) Junior Counsellor positions will introduce L.I.T. graduates and other individuals between the ages of 16 and 17 years of age to a camping experience at a camp counsellor level. Junior Counsellors must attend a one week pre-camp training session, co-facilitate a group of campers with other staff members, and focus their resources on developing camp related skills throughout the summer. Applicants who completed the L.I.T. courses and demonstrated the competencies and skills for becoming a Junior Counsellor will receive first consideration. Positions are limited. Stepping Stones Tansley Woods/Hamilton Family YMCA/Brantford YMCA A fun-filled program that allows young campers to play, learn and discover in a safe and supervised setting. Stepping Stones is an age appropriate full day program with a 1:8 staff to camper ratio. Activities include arts and crafts, songs and music, Theme Daze, and (Indoor) swimming (lifejackets provided). Junior Sports Camp All the fun of Sports Camp with age appropriate programming. Activities include swimming, soccer, basketball, team games, arts & crafts and special Theme Daze. Staff to Camper ratio is 1:10. Sports Camp Sports Camp programs focus on participation and fair play, fitness and team spirit using a combination of traditional sports and innovative activities. Activities include an introduction to swimming, soccer, basketball, team games, arts and crafts. Staff to Camper ratio is 1:12. KidVenture Camp KidVenture lets campers explore their creativity in a safe and fun environment. Activities include: arts and crafts, swimming, co-operative games, outdoor play and Theme Daze. On Thursdays campers will be engaged by a guest speaker who will deliver a special program based on the weeks theme.
